Septic Filing & Permits in the Comox Valley

Courtenay Septic Systems files your septic system with Island Health under the Sewerage System Regulation, as the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox and Village of Cumberland do not permit the system itself. This same Island Health filing applies if you live in CVRD Electoral Areas A, B or C, and we handle all the paperwork for you. We send your Letter of Certification within 30 days of completing the work so you have full proof on file.

Instead of a local permit, our Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioner files your system directly with Island Health to confirm it meets regulations.

We file every Type 1 and Type 2 installation directly with Island Health before we start digging.

Does your municipality get involved?

No — each municipality runs its own building department for structures, but none of them permits the septic system itself. That goes straight to Island Health.

Does Island Health inspect or approve the design?

No. Island Health's own position is that it doesn't inspect, doesn't approve the design and doesn't review filings for technical merit — it checks that the minimum submission criteria are met. As your Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioner, we take full responsibility for designing and filing your system correctly.

What do you get when the work is done?

A Letter of Certification within 30 days of completion, with an as-built diagram and a maintenance plan on file. Keep it — Island Health holds the record, but you'll want your own copy if you ever sell.

Check our cost guide for pricing details. We serve homes in Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland and surrounding rural communities. We handle all septic filings for your property the same way in Black Creek, Royston and Union Bay — starting with a free on-site visit.
